Dr. Petya Chaveeva is an obstetrician-gynecologist and a specialist in the fields of fetal medicine and intrauterine fetal surgery. She obtained her medical degree from the Medical University of Sofia in 2007. Between 2006 and 2007, she attended a course on Obstetrics and Gynecology led by Prof. Atanash Shterev, after which she continued her training as part of the team at the “Dr. Shterev” Medical Complex. Between 2010 and 2013, Dr. Chaveeva completed her three-year residency under the supervision of Prof. Kypros Nicolaides – a specialist in fetal medicine and fetal endoscopic surgery at King’s College Hospital in London. In 2021 she obtained her diploma in fetal medicine with a focus on the following: first-trimester screening for numerical chromosomal aberrations, fetal morphology during the second trimester, monitoring of high-risk pregnancies (single- or multifetal), evaluation of fetal condition using doppler techniques and testing for cervical insufficiency. Dr. Chaveeve also obtained a certificate of competence in fetal echocardiography from Prof. Lindsay Allen, MD.
Dr. Chaveeva is a trained specialist in invasive diagnostic procedures such as chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and amniocentesis. During her last year of training under Prof. Nicolaides, she was focused primarily on endoscopic fetal surgery – laser coagulation of blood vessel anastomoses in case of monochorionic placental complications, as well as minimally invasive fetoscopy. In 2014 and 2015, Dr. Chaveeva conducted for the first time in Bulgaria three pioneering surgical interventions – fetal laser surgery treatment of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), intrauterine blood transfusion and minimally invasive surgery of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
Presently Dr. Chaveeva is an international lecturer, having attended renowned scientific forums in the fields of fetal medicine, prenatal diagnostic and minimally invasive fetal surgery.
