Expanding into the future – Tissue engineering for the treatment of patients with severe and massive burns.
Since the end of the Second World War, there have been major advances in the treatment of severe burns, which means that with a highly specialised multi-professional team with access to all modern treatment methods, patients are surviving with a good quality of life despite up to 95% of their body surface being severely burned.
One of the key steps is the method of growing a skin from a few of the patient’s cells in the laboratory, which allows the patient to survive.
Medical progress, even in this area of severe and massive burns, is made up of many steps, and many doctors and researchers around the world have been involved in all these individual steps.
In my talk, I will focus on the following points based on the complex treatment of a severely burned patient: 1. why independent university research is needed 2. what are the most important factors for successful research 3. what is the ethical background of research.
